Shrewsbury Hospital

The Project

The project involved major refurbishment and upgrade activities undertaken in close proximity to occupied clinical areas and critical healthcare functions of the Shrewsbury Royal Hospital, managed by the NHS Trust. Sixense were appointed by our client, Integrated Health Projects (Sir Robert McAlpine and Vinci Building), to provide specialist construction noise management, monitoring and vibration assessment services in support of the renovation and upgrade work, a live healthcare facility requiring stringent control of environmental impacts throughout construction.

The Scope

Sixense developed and implemented a comprehensive Construction Noise Management Plan (CNMP) tailored to the operational requirements of the hospital, ensuring patient comfort, staff wellbeing and continued clinical performance were maintained during the works. The CNMP defined noise predictions and criteria, mitigation measures and management procedures aligned with relevant guidance and hospital-specific constraints.

In addition, Sixense carried out on-site vibration measurements to assess the potential effects of construction activities on sensitive hospital equipment, including imaging and diagnostic systems. Vibration criteria were established based on equipment sensitivity, manufacturer guidance and best practice standards. Targeted measurements were undertaken during vibration-generating activities, with results reviewed in real time to ensure compliance and to enable immediate mitigation where necessary.

The Conclusion

Through proactive monitoring, close coordination with the contractor & hospital management, and responsive reporting, Sixense supported the successful delivery of the renovation works while safeguarding critical hospital operations and minimising disruption within this sensitive environment and its surrounding receptors.
