As part of the Dawley Above Ground Installation (AGI) works for Cadent, United Infrastructure were required to install a deep borehole within the site boundary to facilitate the provision of cathodic protection equipment. The works involved the formation of a borehole extending to a depth of 100 m to enable the long-term protection of buried metallic assets. The cathodic protection formed a critical component of the overall AGI infrastructure, supporting the safe and reliable operation of the gas network.

Sixense’s scope of works comprised the installation of an automated track monitoring system to Network Rail standard NR/L2/TRK/177, covering approximately 80 m of track between Madeley Junction and Ironbridge Power Station. The works included a pre construction cant gauge survey to establish baseline track geometry, followed by the installation of wireless tilt meters at 3 m centres on the timber sleepers along the existing single line. A solar powered wireless gateway was installed to transmit the data to Sixense’s BEYOND monitoring software. Throughout the drilling and cathodic protection installation activities, the system provided real time, high frequency monitoring to ensure compliance with the NR standard, enabling the early identification of any track movement to maintain the safety of the Network Rail infrastructure.

The drilling and installation works were completed with no significant movements recorded, demonstrating that the works had no adverse impact on the Network Rail infrastructure. The automated monitoring system provided continuous assurance to all stakeholders and enabled the safe completion of the project without the need for mitigation measures.
