Noise at work assessments for piling rig activities at 5 sites across the UK
Menard required Noise at Work assessments to be undertaken at 5 active construction sites located at Wisbech, Avonmouth, Caerphilly, Glasgow and Manchester to assess occupational noise exposure associated with high-energy piling rig activities, in order to ensure compliance with the Control of Noise at Work Regulations 2005 and support the protection of site personnel.
Sixense were commissioned to deliver a programme of on-site noise measurements, undertaken during representative piling operations using a range of piling rigs and ground conditions. Attended surveys were carried out to measure personal noise exposure levels, including LAeq, LEP,d, peak sound pressure levels, and task-based exposure for key operatives working in close proximity to piling equipment.
Measurements were designed to reflect realistic working patterns and durations, capturing variability between different piling techniques, rig configurations, and operational phases. Survey locations included operator positions, banksmen and adjacent site activities to ensure all relevant exposure profiles were assessed.
The collected data was analysed to determine daily noise exposure levels and to identify where Upper and Lower Exposure Action Values were exceeded. Sixense provided clear, practical reporting, including recommendations for noise control measures, equipment selection, maintenance considerations, operational controls and the use of personal hearing protection. Menard were pleased with the reporting outcomes, praising the well laid out report and easy to understand conclusions.
