The Project
The construction works at Gallows Corner form part of a major Transport for London (TfL) project to completely renew and strengthen the ageing flyover at the busy A12 / A127 junction in Romford. Originally built in the 1970s as a temporary structure, the flyover had been subject to long‑standing speed and weight restrictions due to its deteriorating condition.
Construction began in March 2025 and involved the dismantling of large sections of the old flyover, the installation of new foundations and abutments, and the progressive assembly of a new steel‑and‑concrete structure designed to last for decades.
In early 2026, the project entered its final stages. While the junction had remained fully closed to most traffic – except buses, emergency services and black cabs – TfL advised that the entire Gallows Corner junction was expected to reopen by the end of April 2026, following delays caused by unforeseen ground conditions around an adjacent water main.
Once complete, the scheme will improve journey reliability for thousands of drivers, and introduce safer pedestrian and cycle crossings, delivering a significantly upgraded and future‑proofed piece of road infrastructure for east London.
The Scope
In order to demonstrate that the structural repairs had been effective, and that the newly refurbished flyover was performing as expected, TfL instructed Sixense to install a monitoring system comprising 14 Nos. Tiltmeters mounted on the underside steelwork of the flyover deck. The tiltmeter monitoring was complimented by a regime of manual precise levelling undertaken by the main contractor. Data from both the precise levelling and tiltmeters were imported into Sixense’s Beyond Monitoring software and remote access was provided to the client so that they could view the data as and when required.
