British Telecom tunnel monitoring

Crossrail is a major new railway, 73 miles in length, that will link Berkshire and Buckinghamshire, via Greater London, to Essex and Kent. Ten-car trains will run at frequencies of up to 24 trains per hour in each direction through the central tunnel section. The central section of the Crossrail route will run via Paddington, Tottenham Court Road, Farringdon, Liverpool Street and Whitechapel stations.

The Crossrail C421 project was a specialist works package associated with the delivery of Tottenham Court Road station, focusing on the protection of critical third‑party infrastructure during construction of the station’s western ticket hall.

Delivered by the Balfour Beatty, Morgan Sindall and VINCI Construction (BBMV) joint venture, C421 centred on monitoring the adjacent British Telecom (BT) cable tunnel, which runs north–south alongside Dean Street in Soho, directly next to the Crossrail works. Given the tunnel’s strategic importance to London’s communications network and its proximity to deep excavations, Crossrail Limited mandated a dedicated monitoring scheme to ensure any settlement or deformation remained within extremely tight tolerances.

A combination of real‑time and manual monitoring

A comprehensive combination of real‑time and manual deformation monitoring was implemented within the BT tunnel to manage risk throughout critical construction phases. Instrumentation included tiltmeters and electrolevel beams fixed to the tunnel lining for continuous measurement, alongside prisms and precise level points used for detailed manual surveys of the tunnel crown and invert.

All equipment was installed using non‑intrusive clamping methods to minimise impact on the live asset, with daily survey traverses undertaken during the most sensitive foundation works.

The successful execution of Crossrail C421 ensured the BT tunnel remained fully operational and undamaged, demonstrating the programme’s robust approach to asset protection and its ability to safely deliver major infrastructure in one of London’s most constrained historic environments.
